ROCK ART IN THE PROVINCE OF ANTABAMBA (APURÍMAC, PERÚ)
Abstract
To date, in the province of Antabamba, Peruvian department of Apurímac, there are four documented
rock art sites and one to be confirmed. Due to their style, technique and iconography, three of these
sites with pictographs are attributable to the Preceramic (Allhuanso, Kentoqhasa and Huayllanqori;
in the latter there is also an abstract petroglyph); they show zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figures
and others that are not discernible, this due to their poor state of conservation. The fourth station,
Matara, consists of inscultures with spirals, little cups, and wide-groove abstract figurations, most
likely from the Late Horizon or the Late Intermediate, most of which have disappeared in recent years.
It is evident that there is no greater iconographic, stylistic or temporal relationship between these
different rupestrian sites.
